Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers that span both volumes in the series, although I believe they are necessary to both support the points of my review as well as help parents determine the suitability of this work for their children.I've been trying to break out of my comfort zone lately and read works that I would have historically never considered. So, I welcomed the opportunity to dive into Suzie's Adventures.
Speaking of adventure, I'm a serious action-adventure junkie, so it takes a pretty fanciful tale to hold my personal interest over two volumes without ever firing a shot :) Take that as both an endorsement of the content and its suitability for a general, pre-teen audience. I believe boys and girls alike will relate to Suzi's predicament and marvel at the discovery of her special abilities. Girls could imagine themselves as actually being Suzi in the story and boys will no doubt enjoy adventures ranging from fanciful trips to a magic island and visits from benign aliens.
I do like it when children's tales and movies offer something for adults only and I have no idea if this mention was actually intended or not, but I did thoroughly enjoy having the lone policeman mentioned in the story being named Inspector Callahan :)
The writing style is simple and conversational and I believe pre-teens will find the book very easy to read and enjoy on their own. Younger kids would probably enjoy reading it with their parents.
The book is generously illustrated, which is helpful to hold the interest of younger readers.

What a clever idea putting these two books together! Susie's adventures are wonderful stories for children and pre-teens. My grandson is 8 years old and he likes the books because Susie has special abilities. It doesn't matter that the main character is a girl, he likes her abilities and the other characters in her adventures too. As a grandparent, I think the books are very well written but most of all, I like that they capture my grandson's imagination. I can't wait to read more about Susie's adventures!
