To invoke the word Capitalism as the cause of all our problems in the U.S. is why I'm giving this book 1 star. It's incredibly stupid to say America has anything close to the meaning of Capitalism. Capitalism means competition, and when you have competition it makes it absolutely impossible for monopolies to spring about. Either they are large because they are serving consumers wants and providing excellent service which would be perfectly fine, and this would be Capitalist. However, if government is giving privileges to certain groups then this is not Capitalist, it is Socialist instead. Aspects of Capitalism have profit and loss built in, which means if you're not providing a good service to me then I'm going else where to do business, and if you keep giving others bad service then they'll go somewhere else to do business also. True Capitalism means no State intervention whatsoever, and that allows consumer choice due to competition. When government gets involved in regulating it picks winners and losers and bails out its favored or privileged cronies who hate competition. I think Eugene needs to educate himself on the meaning of Capitalism, and stop being so ideological. Learn some economics, especially praxeology (the science of Human Action). Read Ludwig von Mises', Human Action, Murray N. Rothbard's Man, Economy, and State with Power and Market. Read his other books, For A New Liberty, and Egalitarianism A Revolt Against Nature.

Needed. Might now make a lot of friends, but this is needed.
This is the main book I would recommend to anyone interested in issues of race, policing, and prisons in the U.S. It is comprehensive and accessible. Moreover, compared to other books on the topic, it concentrates on the resistance to racism and capitalism as it has manifested in the streets, workplaces, and prisons.
Eugene Puryear puts the current racialised system of US imprisonment in a valuable historical and social perspective. Accessible and well constructed.
Must read for anyone interested in criminology
