I felt compelled to write a review for this book because of its pertinence of the topic in our everyday lives. It's a very easy read -- no matter what your level of understanding of the US economy, the explanations are very clear and well thought through. The author did a great job at making it coherent, intriguing, and informative. I highly recommend reading it!
Basic Economics Today, by Clint Kennedy, delivers precisely what the title predicts. In short chapters, concise format and easy-to-understand terminology, Kennedy describes the overall economic factors that we use to gauge the health of the American economy today ("the worst recession since the Great Depression"), plus such specific issues as schools, health care, terrorism, and the environment.
If you've forgotten most of what you learned in Econ 101, this is an excellent refresher. Here is the often arcane vocabulary with which economists ply their trade made accessible. You'll feel a lot more comfortable (if not necessarily happy) reading about "The Fed", finally getting a handle on the thinking (or lack thereof) behind the C-Credit ARM loans, and Free Trade anomalies.
Kennedy offers solutions, some of which you may or may not agree with, but you'll have a much sounder foundation for what intuitively seems right to you thanks to the tools this excellent reference book provides.
This was really a waste of money. It was so basic it was almost an insult. I doubt the author has any real in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. Anything of substance that was there referred the reader to an outside source. Would not recommend to anyone.
